Event 8-15-2015: Maidu of Indian and Genesee Valleys

What do you need to bring?

Wear comfortable, closed-toes shoes for this tour, and don’t forget to bring your camera! In the interest of the environment, we always encourage our participants to bring their refillable water bottles, which we can refill during the tour. Good walking shoes and a hat are always a plus on all our tours!

Join Lorena Gorbet for this exciting day focused on the Mountain Maidu of Indian and Genesee Valleys. Participants will hear about the Maidu’s history in the area and visit local sites to learn about the Maidu way of life, native vegetation, and food gathering and preparation. The tour will also discuss current and past Maidu land management practices. Lorena Gorbet, whose ancestors have inhabited the area for many years, will tell of their history and her story of growing up in this region.

The tour begins in Taylorsville at the Sierra Institute’s office. Participants will travel to various historical and culturally important sites throughout Indian Valley, hearing of the rich history of the Maidu’s presence in this area. Lunch will be at the Taylorsville Campground, a historical Maidu village site. After lunch, the group will travel to Genesee Valley to see more historical sites and to visit the Heart K Ranch. The day will end at the Indian Valley Museum’s Maidu Room in Taylorsville.
